International Conference on
Palliative Dementia Care, Belfast,
8th - 10th May 2019
Special thanks to our Official Media Partner:
Welcome to the Inaugural International Conference on Palliative Dementia Care, hosted by Northern Ireland Hospice in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Marrying two core disciplines together from a caring perspective for the first time, the 2019 ICPDC seeks to bring together authoritative voices from across the world to share learnings and knowledge with clinical and non-clinical professionals, advocating for a palliative care approach in caring for those with end stage dementia.
Northern Ireland Hospice is a leading provider of specialist palliative care in Northern Ireland. Established in 1983, the organisation now cares for over 4000 infants, children and adults annually. In 2016, NI Hospice took a leading role in developing a Hospice Enabled Dementia Partnership, bringing together professionals and individuals with Dementia to Improve access to Specialist Palliative Care for people with Dementia.
Commonly, ‘hospices’ are seen to care solely for individuals with a cancer diagnosis and in their final days of life. At Northern Ireland Hospice we are advocating for a change in this image, improving the quality of life of everyone who is diagnosed with a terminal illness, including dementia. Of course this aim must continue to embrace exceptional end-of-life care, but it must also enable and encourage exceptional life before this stage. We are proud to help people living with dementia in Northern Ireland to achieve comfort, security, and – often – joy, but we are constantly aware of those who are never afforded the attentions of palliative care.
Through the creation and hosting of this inaugural conference, we aim to bring together international experts in the fields of dementia and palliative care to exchange, develop, and interrogate findings on how this combined expertise might successfully be brought into closer alignment for the benefit of people and practitioners the world over, now and for future generations.
